Environmental and Cost Savings are the Perfect Mix for Dual Fuel.
JLR and Brit European have come together to deploy a fleet of Vehicle Transporters – powered by Duel Fuel Technology – on the Finished Vehicles distribution network. A recent contract award by JLR has enabled Brit European to invest in the new transporters, which utilise a near 50:50 mix of Diesel and Natural gas, to be deployed on the UK Delivery Network from early 2014.
Brit European have designed new innovative solutions – including a new Gas Storage Tank – to adapt the Dual Fuel Technology they pioneered on their Tractors and Draw Bar Units for use on Premium Vehicle Transporters. The key challenge the team faced centred on maximising the available space (stripping back some of the chassis) and making the most efficient use of the space (Innovative Fuel Tank Design), to house the Dual Fuel tanks, whilst always ensuring a safe working environment for the driver.
These innovative transporters are supported by a network of Mobile Fuelling stations (another new innovation designed by Brit European to support the Dual Fuel fleet) for the supply of natural gas.
Natural Gas is a cleaner and more efficient fuel than diesel and mile for mile, CO2 will be reduced by around 20% compared to a standard Diesel Transporter. The deployment of this new technology on JLR Premium Vehicle Delivery is thusly set to save 94 tonnes of CO2 in the first year of deployment. The technology also offers commercial advantages compared to 100% diesel usage and offers JLR the additional advantage of reduced exposure to future fluctuating diesel prices.
Further ahead, the technology has the potential to be developed further. The potential utilisation of bio methane as part of the Dual Fuel mix, could drive CO2 savings be beyond 25%.
Garry Smith, Finished Vehicles Distribution Planning & Strategy Manager commented – “I’m overwhelmed with the effort and engineering design depth delivered by Brit European on this.
